By Sea, By Land is an overland travel website focussed on journeys by train and by ship.
I set it up to give tips and information and, perhaps, a little inspiration to people looking to take overland journeys around the world.
Thanks for letting me share my adventures with you.
The basic idea behind my trips is to enjoy both the journey and the destination.
I don’t mind idea of finding the journey’s end in every step of the road (as Ralph Waldo Emerson suggested). However a hotel with a pool at the end of the day is pretty nice too.
What does By Sea, By Land mean?
The name of my blog “By Sea, By Land” is taken from the Scottish motto for the McDonald Clan.
That motto is “Per Mare, Per Terras” and it translates as “By Sea, By Land”.
(Incidentally, Per Mare, Per Terras is the motto of all of the members of Clan Donald. The members may have different surnames: McDonald, Macdonald, MacDonald and so on, but they are all of the same clan. By Sea, By Land – or Per Mare, Per Terras – is the motto for all of them.)
